Soil for your pleasure: Grow on the Go

written by Sherpa Guy

The real dirt on soils for all your plants…   I have a four part article on soils well worth reading to understand what your plants need.  Grownthego.com

Green Sherpa Grow On The Go

The key to gardening success lies in the soil.  Unfortunately, for many of us aspiring green-thumbs, attempting to understand soil can be an overwhelming task; the road to prize winning roses and bumper crops of tomatoes can seem a rocky one at best.  However, gardeners need not fret.  Although soils can be a vast and complicated field of study (that could truly take a lifetime to thoroughly comprehend), the home gardener can achieve great gardening success simply by understanding a few important principles of soil science.

There are two principles you need to understand;

  • soil fertility
  • soil texture

Soil fertility focuses on many of the elements that exist in the soil, which I will explain in the next article.  Added to that is soil texture a key ingredient to water retention comprising sand silt and clay particles.  texture has a significant impact on the plant, too much drainage and the soil rapidly drys out too much clay and water and the roots lose their cohesion with the soil and in both cases depending on the type of plant the plant wilts and dies.  My next articles will further focus on this and hopefully enlighten you about the complexity of soil and why you need to get it right.

For my Grown on the Go system I use a soil pre-mix that just works great for most plants, see my Grow on the Go system and read my articles on this subject especially if you want to take the uncertainty out of growing.
